“The American Century?:” Questioning the United States’ Hegemony in the 20th Century.
This course examines the United States’ rise and decline as a world power throughout the 20th century. It analyzes the United States’ engagement with the world in its ideological and economic dimensions, as well as American social and cultural influence worldwide. The course pays particular attention as well to understanding the United States’ role in five overseas military conflicts, including the two world wars, in an attempt to show how, throughout the 20th century, American power tried to shape the world, without being immune to world influence in return.

Bibliographie

Shi, David E. & Tindall, George B. America: A Narrative History. New York: Norton. Any edition (as long as it is one of the “brief” ones).

Autre possibilité :

Norton, Mary Beth, David M. Katzman, et al. A People and A Nation: A History of the United States. Boston: Houghton Mifflin. Any edition.

McGreevy, Robert C., Christopher T. Fischer and Alan Dawley. Global America: The United States in the Twentieth Century. Oxford University Press, 2017.

White, Donald W. The American Century: The Rise and Decline of the United States as a World Power. Yale University Press, 1999. (disponible à la BU)

Walter LaFeber, Richard Polenberg & Nancy Woloch. The American Century: A History of the United States Since 1941. Armonk NY : M. E. Sharpe Publ., 2008. (disponible à la BU)
