The UK from 1901 to 2000, a political history
From the high point of 1900, when Britain was the Empire “where the sun never sets” to its role as the last bulwark against Nazism in 1940, the UK was progressively relegated to the status of a second-rate power and even came to be referred to as the “sick man of Europe” in the 1970s. A long process of modernization in the following decades contributed to make Britain one of the most dynamic, if fragile, areas today, be it in economic, financial and cultural terms. This course will analyze these successive dynamics in order better to understand the place of contemporary Britain on the European and global arenas.
