Objectifs

Découverte de l'Australie, de la Nouvelle-Zélande et de leurs voisins océaniens, anciennes colonies britanniques : sociétés, institutions, histoire, place dans l'Empire britannique puis dans le Commonwealth, relations au monde extérieur contemporain : les enjeux géopolitiques de l'Océanie. Ce cours est enseigné en anglais.

This course will provide an introduction to Australia, New Zealand and the other former British territories in the Pacific, past and present: their societies and institutions; their mutual relations, relations with the Empire and the Commonwealth, and the geopolitical considerations of their relations with the broader world today.

Contenu

The following topics will be studied:
1. Origins (a few basic starting points)
2. The colonisation of Australia and New Zealand
3. Colonial society. And: What place did Australia and New Zealand hold within the Empire?
4. Independence: from white British outposts to today's multicultural societies in the Asia / Pacific
5. The Pacific Islands and the geopolitics of the Pacific

Contrôles des connaissances

Contrôle continu (50%) : devoir sur table à la mi-semestre ; synthèse de documents à préparer pour la fin du semestre ; devoirs écrits et / ou présentations orales facultatifs ; participation.
Examen final (50%) : Devoir sur table. Explication de texte (à contextualiser) et questions de cours à approfondir.
